NUKU’ALOFA: Feb15 (Taimi) – Several Zika virus cases have been confirmed by laboratory blood tests in Tonga. Two of the cases reported were in Tonga, and five were reported from New Zealand, of people who have travelled to Tonga and became sick when they returned.
Dr. Reynold Ofanoa, Tonga’s chief medical officer for public health, confirmed the report on Zika.
He said there are 542 cases suspected of the Zika virus in Tonga to date.
In the meantime, the Ministry of Health in collaboration with the Tonga Red Cross, the Military, and others, had initiated a national clean up campaign to eliminate possible breeding sites for the mosquitos that spread the virus.
Tonga’s media are also engaged with the health authorities in running community awareness programs on the Zika virus.
